remedy paper

Coffea cruda Common Name ~ Unroasted coffee Abbreviation ~ Coff.

I chose to do my Remedy Paper on Coffea cruda as at times I have insomnia. I was curious of this particular remedy as I don’t drink coffee but when I do, it makes me very nervous, my mind will race, having palpitations in my heart. Not knowing anything about coffee and the principle of “like cures like” I feel it’s a good place to start my journey into really understanding the business of a proving and get my head to understand the Simillimum. Coffea cruda was included in some of the first provings by Hahnemann. As Roberts points out in The Principles and Art of Cure by Homeopathy and the rational explanation of others we shall see what becomes of “diseases are cured by medicines that have the power to excite a similar affection”. Herbert A. Roberts, MD

Coffea cruda is simply from Unroasted Coffee beans and grown in hot dry subtropical regions with a season full of rain combined making one growth period and one of harvest within the same year.  The coffee plant grows best in the higher altitudes and often referred to as “mountain” coffee. The plant has a chance to flower constantly and therefore allowed a harvest more than once per year. The flower is quite fragrant with clusters in a white star shaped blossom. Grown in the wild, it can reach the height of 30 feet belonging to the Rubiaceae family, the same family as China Officinalis and Ipecauanha. The leaves on this plant are oblong and shiny.

This plant when in full maturity produces a fruit, hand picked and or with proper mechanical equipment. The fruit is purple or red in color typically each berry has two seeds. These seeds are then pulped, fermented and dried. If we were to carry on the process of making coffee, the beans would be roasted, but since Coffee cruda is unroasted we begin our story here to the making of the remedy. This plant contains caffeol, caffeine and tannin and the mother tincture is prepared from these raw berries before the normal roasting in which a coffee is produced.

The caffeine within these berries largely affects the nervous system and the muscular system that produces the twitching with higher increase in the heart rate. Coffea cruda stimulates all the organs. It is found that coffee drinkers who do get chills or intermittent fever don’t find this remedy as effective.  Therefore this is a good remedy for someone who does not drink coffee, is not addicted to caffeine, and indicates various keynotes below. Unusual activity of the mind and body and extreme sensitiveness characterizes this remedy.

I thought the screen shot that I took below was pretty interesting to find after I had heard a seminar from George Dimitriadis mentioning some essays that were written included Coffea cruda. I found this in the Hahnemannian Monthly – Volume 51 published in 1916:

Some of the keynotes for this remedy would be the following:
Mind ~ Intolerance of pain, driven to despair, full of ideas, quick to act, memory heightened, can labor intensely until the point of breaking down, insomnia by excessive pleasure or an overactive brain from 3 AM and not returning to sleep but dozing, hypersensitive to stimuli, dislike of noise, or going over plans or events, same idea always repeated, senses acute, can read fine print easily. Excessive weeping and or lamenting over trifles.
Physical ~ Sensitive hearing, intolerance of tight clothing, intolerance of odor, taste and touch are acute, sleeplessness not narcosis, one sided headaches, dysmenorrhoea, early or prolonged menses, hypersensitivity of vulva and vagina, shooting pains in arms or legs, painful colic, severe labor pains, pain threatened by abortion, toothache but only if patient can handle cold, eructation’s of sour, irregular heart action, hoarseness on waking, sore throat, nervous tickle at night, eats and drinks with hurried mind, convulsive teeth grinding, hand tremors, buzzing in the ears.
Emotional ~ very emotional, affected by sudden surprises, sudden laughter to tears, joy, irritability, tossing about in anguish, effective to calm a mind that is overflowing with thoughts, used it during the day on people who were feeling scattered, and before bed for those whose minds will not stop racing.

Comparing Coffea cruda with different Materia Medica and authors. I studied Boericke, Gibson, Morrison and several online sites on the Internet. To be honest, I did not see any one major fact that stood out from the different sources so instead, I have written about my small experience with Coffea cruda.

I tried taking Coffea cruda one evening when I woke at the usual hour of 2:30 am.  Within 20 minutes of taking the remedy I was unable to think clearly. Usually running the remedy names and families to get to sleep, works better than counting sheep I was unable to get past any of the names. I fell asleep, waking perhaps once or twice but with a dull more than drowsy usual way of waking and then falling to sleep again. I thought it was a great experiment for me to then try Nux Vomica for comparison however, since taking the Coffea cruda; I have not had insomnia. I will wait the next time to see the difference.
I found that Coffea was effective in calming my mind with all the overflow of thoughts that keep me from falling back to sleep soundly. It is said that you can use Coffea when you feel scattered and or before bed. If I can apply this theory, I plan to give it a try. I am very happy with my small experiment however basic.  It certainly is a great example that can be well described to show the “like cures like” principles of Homeopathy. Coffea made from coffee and then potentized into a remedy allows the opposite to occur. Certainly cheaper and 100% safer than any sleep aid over the counter options and a much wiser choice over prescription drugs that one becomes addicted to. I am grateful I have never used prescription drugs.  I plan to post my paper in my ongoing blog so that followers will read how Coffea is 100% natural way to consider your acute or chronic issues with insomnia. Since writing this paper, I have realized that depending on what type of person you are as well as how you cope in life, will be depend on whether Coffea cruda is a good remedy choice to consider.
