This is a great paper by Izabela, Bon Bon study buddy sent to me to read and gave me permission to post in my blog:)
Sadly there were great pictures but I can't seem to add them so will try to add them some time when I get them in a different form.
So I present to you a remedy report ~

NUX VOMICA

Abbr.: Nux-v
Common name: Poison Nut Tree
Family: Loganiaceae
Kingdom: Plant

The remedy for a 21st century man! Well, a man and a woman. For quite a while I thought I was a Nux Vomica person. After all, I’ve been impatient, can’t stand peoples’ stupidity, the smallest things would drive me crazy. And driving….As much as I do love driving, I can get the worst case of road rage. I can’t stand driving on a fast lane behind someone who just doesn’t seem to be in any rush. Really?? Get over to the slow lane, or even better – get off the freeway! Freeway is for serious folks, people who have things that need to be done, who can’t waste any time! Being stuck behind someone slow “drives” me nuts, almost makes me feel like I’m trapped. I need to get over and around that person. And while I’m passing him over, I will make sure I give him my most scary look; maybe even throw hands in the air or something. No, I won’t give him “the finger”. I don’t go that low. J

But seriously – Nux Vomica seems to be a remedy I could see being prescribed to so many people these days. Even though I am not that convinced anymore that I’m Nux-v (well, still something to consider; even my own homeopath said I was “tense”), I see myself using it every now and then.

Nux vomica comes from poison nut tree, from the Loganiaceae family. The mother tincture of this remedy is prepared from dried seeds. There are usually 5 seeds in each fruit. The seeds contain a few alkaloids, strychnine being one of them. Strychnine is poisonous to both humans and animals. It used to be the poison of choice, made famous or rather infamous back in the day. Today strychnine is still used as a pesticide. The signs of strychnine poisoning include muscle spasms, abdominal cramps, restlessness and agitation amongst others.

Nux Vomica was proved by Hahnemann himself and was thoroughly described in “Materia Media Pura”. Nux-v is one of the polychrests, as it is commonly used to help with many diseases. It is one of the most often prescribed remedies.

The typical Nux-v patient is often thin, very irritable, active and competitive. Type A personality very well matches Nux-v description; big ambitions, very focused (often overworked) mind. Work and being successful at it (must be number 1!) is at the center of interest for Nux-v. He usually doesn’t lack confidence; he knows he is good at what he does. He may be arrogant. Very easily aggravated, irritated. He can be compulsive. Have I mentioned impatience? The smallest things can put Nux-v on edge, causing anger or even aggression. The slow driver on the freeway, slow waiter at the restaurant, slow cashier at the store – can all annoy him and drive him crazy. But it’s not just the people that can aggravate Nux-v; bad reception on his phone will annoy him (and maybe even make him throw the phone); he can throw, break, hit and kick things around him. If needed. J It almost feels like Nux-v needs an outlet to deal with the sudden surge of energy (be it the rage, anger, overexcitement). And he does feel better afterwards (after he broke the vase, or made a dent in the wall).

Nux-v is very competitive and always must win. Second place is a loser’s place. It’s win or nothing for Nux-v. He may be prone to using and overusing stimulants like coffee, alcohol, drugs etc. He will drink coffee in the morning to be wide awake and tackle all the tasks at work with ease and speed. In the evening he will drink alcohol to calm his mind and try to fall asleep. Sleeping…Nux vomica may have some issues in that area. Often wide awake around 3am. He can’t go back to sleep; the thoughts of things to be done in a coming day, the tasks to be accomplished keep his mind alert and don’t allow him to go back to sleep. That’s why he will most likely have several cups of coffee in the morning…

Nux vomica person is very sensitive to things around him: smells, food, touch, pain, noise, music. He likes things in certain order, is usually tidy and organized.
Nux-v works hard and plays hard. Often doesn’t know limits in either area. This may cause collapse from overwork as well as from overindulgence of stimulants.

This is a very cold, chilly remedy. Nux-v person is always cold. Even slight draft can make him uncomfortable and miserable. And angry. Nux Vomica’s physical problems are often centered on his gastrointestinal region. The foods and drinks he desires are usually the ones that will make him not feel good, like fats, meat, milk, and alcohol. Therefore Nux vomica is very well known as a remedy for overindulgence. And yes, that includes hangover too (oh, how I wish I knew that 20 years ago!). Constipation seems to be common as well. Often causing hemorrhoids pain. It should be no surprise that the strychnine poisoning symptoms happen to be similar to symptoms that call for use of Nux-v, like abdominal cramping, muscle spasms or nervous system disturbances.

What I found interesting while researching Nux Vomica is that many pains experienced by a Nux-v patient can be caused by anger, which seems to be a quite pre-dominant and often seen emotion with these patients. These could be stomach pains, liver pains, etc. It’s been said that liver is body’s filter, and that anger will first and foremost affect this particular organ. I happened to have these types of pains several months ago: there were in my stomach/liver area. I was quite stressed out, and had some anger emotions going on. I noticed that the more upset I felt, the worse the pains were. They did feel better after eating though. But a glass of wine would make it worse. Nux vomica anyone? J

Great remedies for the soul
