SUCCUSSION ~ shaking; the process of potentization (vigorously shaking with impact the properly diluted homeopathic remedy). Hahnemann, according to his method (though he changed it several times), suggested that the vial be held in the hand and with an up-and-down motion of the forearm strike the vial against the opposite palm or a leather-bound book at least ten times. Today mechanical means are also employed to accomplish this potentizing process.
